Professor Guerrero was a great combo leader for my first year with the Music Performance Program at Columbia. He has an extensive knowledge of jazz history and discography, and he always brought interesting, engaging charts and original music. I grew a lot as a musician from him, and I had a great experience playing with him.

During Gabriel's jazz piano lessons I learned a lot in a short amount of time. He's very knowledgeable and patient, and answers all of my questions. He taught me many ways to practice my skills at home so I can keep improving!

I first started taking lessons with Gabriel coming with a deep love for jazz but very little technical experience on the keys. He has been such an amazing and supportive teacher, especially in helping me finally systemize my learning process. We started right with the basics, and he always gave me clear, actionable examples of exactly what to practice to actually see improvement. I’ve really appreciated how he balances discipline with creativity, also. I can bring in any tune I’m interested in, and he breaks down the ‘how’ and ‘why’ of the music so clearly. There is no such thing as a “wrong” endeavor under his guidance, only a learning experience. He also shares so many valuable listening references, and his lessons are structured in such a way that I can re-visit them and work on what we went over for a very long time, building it into my practice routine. Gabriel creates an environment that has really expanded my own intrinsic desire to learn. If you're looking for a kind and inspiring mentor, I can’t recommend him enough!

I have been studying piano with Gabriel Guerrero for over the past four months, taking lessons on a weekly basis. I have found him to be very patient and insightful of what areas I need to work on and how much can be accomplished within a given time frame. He is very open to and encourages feedback from me. I am principally interested in classical but now have some interest in learning jazz as well and like the fact that I can explore both with him. I feel I have been making very good progress in my overall musicianship and in my piano skills under his guidance.

I was fortunate to have lessons from Gabriel at Swarnabhumi Academy of Music some years ago. He was kind and extremely talented as a musician and a teacher. His encouragement and teachings had a profound impact on my own musicianship for which I’m very grateful!

I have studied under Gabriel for a few months now, and he has been greatly accommodating to my experience and skill level with the piano. I would recommend him to others seeking a skilled teacher in Brooklyn.

I’ve studied with Professor Guerrero for a year now and found his teaching to be quite helpful to my growth as a jazz pianist. We’ve worked on building my repertoire, my jazz vocabulary, and my musical voice through tunes, scales, exercises, transcriptions, voicings, and many other practices.

Having studied with Gabriel for about a year now, it is clear that he’s not only an incredibly skilled musician but also a kind, thoughtful, and effective teacher. Gabriel’s emphasis on musicality and creativity makes our lessons well-organized but never rigid, and this leaves room to go down interesting musical paths and explore different solo possibilities. He also often brings a melodica to our lessons, and it’s both fun and enriching to practice trading solos and hear Gabriel demonstrate interesting musical ideas that I can implement into my playing! Would highly recommend, and I look forward to continue working with Gabriel in the future!

As a pianist, Gabriel is extremely talented and can perform a range of styles with grace and passion for the music. As a teacher, he's what every student should want from their teacher: he is knowledgeable, caring, kind, and always seems to know the right remedy for overcoming a specific situation. I'm privileged to have been able to learn under his guidance -- it has taken my jazz piano level to new heights.

Gabriel is an incredible teacher who not only cares for his students but knows what they need to work on to take them to the next level. While working with him, I gained a deeper sense of collective melody and rhythm within an ensemble and have a greater confidence in the melodic voice of my ear. Without him I would not have been accepted into NEC's Masters in Jazz Piano Performance program and would not be the same musician I am today--highly recommend!

Gabriel is not only and amazing pianist but a thoughtful educator, studying melodic improvisation, Rhythmic proficiency and analysis of Afro Cuban music has been some of the most enriching experiences I've ever had in my musical journey, I highly recommend him as a teacher for anyone interested in jazz, jazz adjacent and contemporary music.

Gabriel is a great teacher—patient, supportive, and clear in his explanations. He presents abstract jazz concepts in a way that makes them easy to understand and apply. I’ve already seen real progress in just a few weeks and would definitely recommend him to anyone looking to grow in jazz.

Gabriel is as fantastically patient as he is a piano player of all genres... really glad we crossed paths to help me transition into jazz following years of classical and pop.

I found Gabriel to be a great teacher. He is serious about his music, and his teaching, and he had deep insights into harmony, and theory, and the path for me to continue to evolve my understanding of jazz piano. I highly recommend him as a teacher.

Great workshop in Bogotá, Colombia. August 2017. Gabriel shared technical information and human experience about jazz piano performance. Very enriching.

Gabriel is a wonderful teacher, my son took lessons with him while in high school and now, post-college, is still inspired by and practices what he learned from Gabriel. I highly recommend Gabriel!

Gabriel is such an incredible teacher! He meets you exactly where you’re at and tailors his approach based on how you learn best. I’m personally more interested in learning to play jazz and right from the beginning he made that a priority rather than focusing on traditional classical pieces. I’ve loved taking lessons with him and recommend lessons with Gabriel for piano players at any level!

Gabriel is a blessing to this 50 year old amateur! He is patient and kind. He gives me simple tasks to refine my skills at home. My lessons are personalized and he understands what my end goal is. I’m hoping, with his help, to be playing Christmas music for the family this next holiday season!

A good friend, great teacher and incredible performer/composer. Helped me a lot when I needed to improve my harmonic and melodic knowledge. Highly recommend him if you want to improve your musicianship.

Gabriel does an excellent job of working with his clients’ current skill levels and strengthening their weaknesses. I came in with good theory knowledge but poor mechanics and in only a couple months his lessons have made noticeable improvements in my playing.

Not all brilliant pianists are good teachers. Gabriel is the rare combination of both. I cannot recommend him enough for lessons. Whether you’re looking to learn jazz or classical, beginner or advanced—you’re in great hands with Gabriel.

Gabriel has a unique ability to find songs and pieces that fit my skill level and interest, and yet have the continuity of the curriculum across all of them. So he avoids the trap of having me study off of a single, published piano course (which could be generic and somewhat boring), which is what many piano teachers will do. Other piano teachers will let you pick your favorite songs, and you will have fun but not improve. Gabriel has a thoughtful curriculum in mind, and it is logical, progressive, custom-designed for me, with every new song building on what we already learned. That is high quality stuff, very rare!

I’ve known Gabe for a number of years. I’ve known him in the capacity of a piano teacher. He is patient and thoughtful. We played challenging and beautiful compositions. I’ve also hired Gabe for personal events where he has played the piano for entertainment. He is an extraordinary musician.

I’ve been taking lessons with Gabriel for several months and it’s been a great journey so far. He’s clearly a deeply experienced teacher and player who’s passionate about his craft and I’ve made solid progress in a reasonable amount of time. I especially like how he’s willing to accommodate whatever you’re most interested in learning (e.g classical, sight reading, jazz, music theory, etc.) Also, his rates are competitive and he’s flexible with scheduling hours. Highly recommended.

Gabriel is a very inspiring professor that can cover technical and music aspects from fundamentals to advanced interpretation techniques. He not only helped me prepare for a master’s degree recital in jazz but also inspired me on continuing my music career. I highly recommend his classes!

Gabriel is a great piano teacher. I’ve finally found someone who is willing to work with me in a way that makes sense. He’s patient, kind, and takes the time to understand what might help me work through my blind spots. I’m an adult learner with very little spare time, so it’s slow going for me, but I absolutely look forward to my lessons and what lies ahead in the weeks and months to come. I do recommend him highly.
